Primroses are a real sign of Summer in the countryside, but can be found as early as February in sheltered spots. These flowers were spotted in woodland, but they may be also captured in hedges. Its gaelic name is sabhaircín. According to ‘Wildflowers of Ireland’ the latin name translates to ‘first flower’. Traditionally a string of primroses was left on the steps of a house on the first three days of May to ward off the fairies…!!
