About us

Welcome to Woodlawn Heritage Group Website. We have joined a network of local community groups and are honoured to be part of this Galway Community Website and iCAN project. This website is created and maintained by a group of volunteers assisted by participants with Woodlawn Heritage Group Community Employment Scheme. We are always interested in welcoming new volunteers – so if you would like to help please contact us.

Woodlawn Heritage Group was formed in 1993, based on an idea of the late Paddy Quinn, Killaan, Woodlawn. The general aim of the group was to develop and preserve the amenities of the Woodlawn area. As a means of having development and preservation work carried out, it was decided that the group would sponsor a Community Employment Scheme. Over many years, the group undertook various conservation projects on a number of the heritage buildings in the area and enhancing the general landscape.

It was noted by the group that no comprehensive history of Woodlawn was ever compiled. In 2009 a sub-committee was formed to take charge of this project. With so many enthusiastic people involved, one would imagine that a book would have been on the shelves in a matter of months. Little did we know what we were letting ourselves in for!

The Committee undertook a “Localore” Course conducted by Tomas Hardiman, co-ordinated by Marie Mannion, Heritage Officer of Galway County Council and funded by GRD. This Course provided valuable information on methods of researching historical and photographic archives together with recording local spoken histories. It was of enormous benefit to all participants. Advice and support from many quarters resulted in us finally having our book ready for publication. It was decided this forum could be another way to display and share the quantity of material researched and gathered which may not be included in our publication.

We therefore present the collective efforts of Woodlawn Heritage Group and you, our knowledgeable contributors, in what we hope to be an informative and accessible heritage of Woodlawn and environs. We will maintain this as an open access website and encourage contributions from all individuals and groups with a regard for Woodlawn and surrounding areas while retaining editorial control over all submissions.

This website is created by a group of volunteers. We’re always interested in new recruits, so if you’re interested please contact us.
