Lough Acalla, Location

Recorded Monument GA 73:032 (Crannóg) is located on Calla Lake.  A crannóg is a (some-times partially) man-made island structure dating from C6th – C17th. The gaelic for tree is crann, and these structures are generally constructed of brushwood, trees and stone.

A visit to the crannóg during Ireland’s big freeze a number of years ago confirmed the presence of a stone structure.

Schools Collection of Folklore

Calla Lake or Lough Acalla is located north of Kilconnell. It is mentioned in the Schools Collection of Folklore for Woodlawn National School as covering fifty acres of land. It is supposed that it was on that island that some of the monks who were banished from the (Kilconnell) abbey lived in a little hut in it. This lake is supposed to be blessed and no-one was ever drowned in it.
