Restoration of the Woodlawn Archway Folly

Woodlawn Archway was originally built by the Trench Family
and intended as the Grand Entrance to their burial ground,
Trench Mausoleum. Local knowledge informs us that there
was an early walkway/carriageway to the mausoleum from
where the Archway was built. However as it took a long number
of years to construct c1790 it was never actually used as the Entrance.
Folklore also referred to the entrance as the ‘Gates to Heaven’.

In 2006 intensive restoration work was completed which was grant aided
by the Heritage Council of Ireland. Attached documents including picture
outline the inspected report and proposed repairs by
Gerry McManus B Arch. M Arch. Sc(Building conservation)MRIAI,
Rockmount Claregalway, Co Galway.

As noted on the report the Archway is a protected structure but not a recorded structure
on the Record of Monuments and Places.
