TO SCHOOL THROUGH THE FIELDS

Getting to school entailed a long walk for a large number of children.

We walked approx 2 km from Annagh with part of it through 2 fields to Garafine School.  Access to the fields from Liscuib road, was a Stile now covered in foliage, in the shape of an arch.   These fields were divided by a small river.  The bridge was constructed of a large plank across the bridge with sheep wire on each side supported by 2 poles.   In winter it was always dauting after rain when the water level was high and fast flowing.  As a four year old this was like a great dauting adventure each day. This route was travelled in all weathers.

The school was a large 2  class – roomed building with a high roof and chimney for the  two open fires providing the only heating for the classrooms.
