Carrowmore is derived from the Gaelic An Ceathru Mór or Ceathramhadh Mór which means the Big Quarter or Great Quarter. Other forms of the name are Carhoomore, Carruemore, Carramore, Caramore. Carrowmore is situated in the West of the parish, bounded by Monaveen and Cloonacalleen in this parish, Cloonacolleen, Cloonahinch and Woodlawn in the parish of Killaan, by Carraholla and Tullawicky in the parish of Ballymacward in the barony of Kilconnell. Down Survey 1641 (pre Cromwell) name is Carrowmore Muneveene and the landowner is John O’Kelly. Landowner in 1670 (post Cromwell) is Peeter Martin. Per Griffiths Valuation of 1850 Carrowmore comprises of 286 acres and 33 perches.

Woodlawn Station

Woodlawn Station comprises a pair of semi-detached, two storey, ‘L’ plan signal men’s houses with random squared limestone facades and cut stone dressings, c. 1860.  Adjoining and including a signal box c. 1900, refenestrated, c. 1990. These are located at the level crossing. Woodlawn Station warehouse is also visible here. This monumental medieval style railway warehouse with stone façade, gables and large arched opes, was built in 1851. The interior contains a small crane.

Woodlawn Station is a semi-detached three bay single storey Tudor style railway station with adjoining three-bay two storey house, built 1851. The station was designed by George Willoughby Hemans.

Woodlawn Post Office

Woodlawn Post Office is a renovated gate lodge to Woodlawn House. It is recorded as a protected structure (RPS

Census 1901 for Carrowmore

There were 19 households listed in the townland of Carrowmore in 1901.  There were fifty-three males and forty-three females. Seventy-three of the occupants of Carrowmore were born in Co. Galway. Others were born in Roscommon, Sligo,   Leitrim, Kildare, Westmeath, Clare, Mayo, Dublin, Monaghan, Wicklow, Fermanagh, Tipperary and Down.  One occupant of one of the households was born in England.  The heads of the households were: George Walker, Susan Robinson, Joseph Monaghan, Bridget McGowan, John Kennedy, Anne Keating, William Cregg, Michael Cavanagh, James Turner, John Sweeney, Patrick Quinn, Denis Madden, James Browne, Connor Kelly, Margaret Scarry, James McCulla, John Kelly, Patrick Raftery, James Denlin and George A Wilson.  The census forms that were collected on 1st April 1901 showed 14 houses were listed as private dwellings 1 listed as a post office 1 listed as a railway station 1 listed as a railway store 1 listed as a public house and 1 listed as an army barracks.

George Walker (67) lived with his wife Catherine (57) his daughters Fanny (36) Eliza Mary (30) and George Mildred (25) Ketty Igo a Servant (70) and Joe Dillion a Servant (25).  George listed his occupation as a Farmer while his wife Catherine was a Farmer’s wife.  Both George and Catherine could read and write.  Fanny, Eliza Mary, and George Mildred were listed as provision merchant and could read and write.  Ketty Igo was listed as General Servant Domestic and spoke Irish and English.  Joe Dillon was listed as General Servant Domestic and could read and write.  The Walker family lived in a 1st class house with 11 front windows and the house had 3 rooms.  George owned the land on which the house was situated.

Susan Robinson (30) lived with her niece Ellen (21).  Susan listed her occupation as a sub postmistress while her niece Ellen listed her occupation as post office assistant.  Both Susan and Ellen could read and write.  Susan and Ellen lived in a 2nd class house a Post Office with 6 front windows and the house had 2 rooms.  Lord Ashtown owned the land on which the house was situated.

Joseph Monaghan (20) lived with his wife Mary (28) and his sons Patrick (3) and Eugene whose age is not documented.  Joseph listed his occupation as a Goods Clerk while his wife Mary was a housekeeper.  Both Joseph and Mary could read and write.  Naturally there were no listed occupations for Patrick and Eugene.  The Monaghan family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and the house had 2 rooms.  Midland G. W. Railway owned the land on which the house was situated.  The Monaghan family shared this house with the McGowan family.  (See below).

Bridget McGowan (42) a widow lived with her son Mich J (21).  Bridget listed her occupation as a housekeeper while her son Mich J listed his occupation as a Railway Signalman.  Both Bridget and Mich J spoke Irish and English and could read and write.  The McGowan family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and the house had 2 rooms.  Midland G. W. Railway owned the land on which the house was situated.  The McGowan family shared this house with the Monaghan family.  (See above).

John Kennedy (28) lived alone. John listed his occupation as a Station Master.  John could read and write.  John lived in a 2nd class house, a Railway Station with 6 front windows and the house had 3 rooms.  Midland G. W. Railway owned the land on which the house was situated. He was born in County Clare.

Anne Keating (50) a widow lived with her sons Mathias (25) John (18) and Patrick (15) and her daughter Elizabeth (13).  Anne listed her occupation as a housekeeper. Mathias and John listed their occupations as General Servants. Patrick and Elizabeth were listed as scholars. All children could read and write. The Keating family lived in a 2nd class house with 2 front windows and the house had 3 rooms. Lord Ashtown owned the land on which the house was situated.

William Cregg (49) lived with his wife Esther (39) his son William M (12) and his daughters Mary E (14) and Jemima F (10).  William listed his occupation as Pensioner from R.I.C. while his wife Esther was a housekeeper.  Both William and Esther could read and write.  Mary E, William M and Jemima F were listed as scholars and could read and write.  The Cregg family lived in a 2nd class house with 2 front windows and the house had 2 rooms.  Lord Ashtown owned the land on which the house was situated.

Michael Cavanagh (54) a widower lived with his son Michael (18) and his daughter Ellen (15).  Michael listed his occupation as a Shoe Maker and could read and write.  Michael listed his occupation as a Stable Boy and General Assistant and could read and write.  Ellen listed her occupation as Housekeeper and could read and write.  The Cavanagh family lived in a 2nd class house with 2 front windows and the house had 3 rooms.  Lord Ashtown owned the land on which the house was situated.

James Turner (23) lived with his brothers Thomas (18) Patrick (15) John (13) George (11) Michael (10) William (9) Francis (7) and his sister Margaret (19).  James and Thomas listed their occupations as Farm Labourers. Patrick was a post messenger. Margaret listed her occupation as Housekeeper. John, George, Michael, William and Francis were listed as scholars.The Turner family lived in a 3rd class house with 1 front window and the house had 2 rooms. John Sweeney (62) lived with his wife Mary (62) and his daughter Ellen (22) and his son Henry (19). John listed his occupation as a Carpenter while his wife Mary was a Housekeeper. John spoke Irish and English. There was no listed occupation for Ellen. Henry was listed as a Carpenter. The Sweeney family lived in a 2nd class house with 4 front windows and the house had 3 rooms.  Lord Ashtown owned the land on which the house was situated.

Patrick Quinn (39) lived with his wife Anna Maria (38) and his daughters Ellen (17),Bridget (15), Mary (13), Annie (11) and Cathleen (8), John Madden (30) a lodger and Martin Davern (27) a servant.  Patrick listed his occupation as a farmer while his wife Anna Maria was a housekeeper.  Both Patrick and Anna Maria could read and write.  There was no listed occupation for Ellen. Bridget, Mary, Annie and Cathleen were listed as scholars.  All the children could read and write. John Madden was listed as a Railway Signal Man and could read and write. Martin Davern was listed as a farm servant, spoke Irish and English and could read and write. The Quinn family lived in a 2nd class house with 4 front windows and the house had 3 rooms.  Patrick Quinn owned the land on which the house was situated.

Denis Madden (40) lived with his wife Ellen (26) and his sons Thomas (2) and John (1) and Anne Mullins (15) a visitor.  Both Denis and Ellen listed their occupations as a Farmer and Farmer’s wife.  Denis spoke Irish and English and could read and write.  Ellen could read and write.  Thomas and John were listed as Farmers sons.  There was no listed occupation for Anne Mullins. Anne could read and write. The Madden family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and the house had 3 rooms.  Denis Madden owned the land on which the house was situated. The Madden family shared this house with the Browne family. (See below).

James Browne (31) lived with his wife Mary (22). James listed his occupation as an Army Reserve and Postman and his wife Mary was a housekeeper.  Both James and Mary could read and write.  The Browne family lived in a 2nd class house with 3 front windows and the house had 3 rooms. Denis Madden owned the land on which the house was situated. The Browne family shared this house with the Madden family. (See above).

Connor Kelly (56) lived with his wife Mary (62) and his son Patrick (25) and his daughter Bridget (20). Connor listed his occupation as a Farmer while his wife Mary was a housekeeper.  Both Connor and Mary spoke Irish and English and could read and write.  Patrick was listed as a farmer’s son and could read and write. Both James and Mary listed their occupations as farmers. Both James and Mary spoke English and could read and write. Joseph, James and Dominick were listed as farm assistants. Katie and Rebecca were listed as house assistants. All the children spoke English and could read and write. John Kelly (40) lived with his wife Elizabeth (20) his son John J, father in law Hugh Blehileen (80), sister in law Honor Conway (35) and niece Honor Conway (2). John listed his occupation as farm labourer while his wife Elizabeth was a housekeeper.  John spoke Irish and English and could read. Elizabeth could read and write. Hugh Blehileen listed his occupation as farm labourer spoke Irish and English. Honor Conway listed her occupation as washer woman spoke Irish and English and could read and write. Both Patrick and Winefred could read and write.  Naturally there were no listed occupations for James, John and Anne. Anne listed her occupation as a Shop Keeper and could read and write.  James listed his occupation as a Farmer and could read and write. Kate Kelly listed her occupation as Shop Assistant and could read and write.  Margaret Hassey listed her occupation as a Nurse and could read and write.  Margaret Silke listed her occupation as Domestic Servant.  The Raftery family lived in a 1st class house with 11 front windows and the house had 6 rooms.  Patrick Raftery owned the land on which the house was situated.

James Denlin (60) lived with James Costelloe(60) a widower. James Denlin listed his occupation as a Baker spoke Irish and English and could read and write. James Costelloe listed his occupation as farm servant spoke Irish and English and could read and write. James Denlin and James Costelloe lived in a 2nd class house with 4 front windows and the house had 2 rooms. Patrick Raftery owned the land on which the house was situated.

A. W. (41) lived with W.A. (44) I.C. (22) M.H. (44) and P.L.H. (21). G. A. W., W.B., I.C. and M.H. listed their occupations as Farming. P.L.H. listed his occupation as Railway Clerk and could read and write.  G. A. W., W.B., I.C., and M.H. could read and write.  M.H. spoke Irish and English.  G. A. Census 1911 for Carrowmore

There were 15 households listed in the townland of Carrowmore in 1911. The heads of the households were: Catherine Walker, Anne Keating, William Cregg, Mary Kelly, Margaret Turner, Patrick Quinn, Denis Madden, Connor Kelly, Michael Barry, James McCullagh, Patrick Raftery, Robert Foote, Thomas Coen, Patrick Sheridan, R.S. and Richard Sharpe. The census forms collected on the 6th April 1911 showed 16 houses listed as private dwellings, an army barracks and a restaurant. Overall there was a total of 63 farm buildings (7 stables, 1 Coach house,5 1 harness room, 9 cow houses, 5 calf houses, 7 piggeries, 4 fowl houses, 1 boiling house, 5 barns, 5 turf houses, 2 potato houses, 1 workshop, 9 sheds and 1 store).

Catherine Walker (67) a widow lived with her daughters Fanny (49) and Mary (43) and two servants; Margaret Queenan (16) and James Hynes (30). There were no listed occupations for Catherine, Fanny or Mary. Fanny and Mary could read and write. Margaret Queenan could read and write. James Hynes was listed as a farm servant. The Walker family lived in a 2nd class house with 5 front windows and the house had 4 rooms. Catherine owned the land on which the house was situated along with 1 stable, 1 cow house, 1 calf house, 1 piggery, 1 fowl house, 1 barn, 1 turf house, and 1 potato house.

Anne Keating (69) was a widow and lived with her sons Mathew (34) Patrick (23) and her daughter Elizabeth (21). There was no listed occupation for Anne. Anne could read and write. Mathew was listed as house servant domestic. Patrick was listed as an Agricultural Labourer. There was no listed occupation for Elizabeth. Mathew, Patrick and Elizabeth could read and write.
