Remembering our Community Midwives & Nurses‘ Project.

An exhibition will open on 3rd October in the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life Castlebar and is based on research conducted by Emma Laffey, Skehana & District Heritage Group

Emma is co-curating the exhibition with Dr Éimear O’Connor, National Museum of Ireland based on Mary Ann Fanning – Midwife.  As part of the project we were invited to research and include Community Midwifes in our own locality.

Woodlawn Heritage Group are exceptionally grateful to Fr Ray Sweeney and his family for sharing their precious memories and records of their mother’s invaluable work as a midwife in Bullaun & Loughrea Districts. Bridget Ann Sweeney (nee Broderick) assisted in home births and is fondly remembered by a large number of people in the locality.
